In eastern Nebraska cow-calf producers with spring calving herds generally plan their weaning around harvest and subsequently make decisions about culling cows from the herd. Grounds for being culled may include difficulty rebreeding, old age, genetic improvement from replacement breeding stock, poor health, or physical defects (such as bad feet, mouth, and eyes), disposition, and producing poor quality calves. Historical data shows that culling cows ordinarily generates 15-30% of an operation’s annual income.

Nebraska Extension will host a risk management workshop for cattle producers from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 1 at the 4-H Building on the Saunders County Fairgrounds, 635 E. 1st St., in Wahoo. Cattle producers will learn strategies designed to reduce risk exposure to achieve a profitable outcome in uncertain times.

Current issues facing the cattle industry will be discussed to help producers to make more informed decisions facing the industry.

Beef Niche Markets

            Over the last several months, the profit margins for beef producers have been slim at best. While cost of gain and transportation costs rise, the fat cattle board is one of few commodities that has not skyrocketed. Conversely, box beef and retail prices have drastically increased, and large packers have been prospering while producers are left to metaphorically “squeeze blood from a stone.” Diversifying entities or utilizing niche markets are two different ideologies producers have adopted to increase revenue.
