Nebraska Extension and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Center for Agricultural Profitability will host a land management workshop in Auburn from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 2 at the Nemaha County Fairgrounds 4-H Building, 816 I St.
Fall Forage Considerations
In recent years, utilization of cover crops for fall forage after wheat and corn silage harvest has become more common, as opposed to letting fields lay fallow until planting of subsequent the spring crop. While these mixtures are not usually planted until August or early September it is important to get a game plan ready in advance. There are multiple ways to “strip this wire” per se, so it is pertinent to begin with the end goals in mind. Some mixtures can combat compaction, fixate greater levels of nitrogen, or possess the value to be utilized as early or late season forage.
Pinkeye
It is no secret that rainfall and humidity aid in the quality and quantity of summer forage production. However, these two factors also contribute to the fly populations. Not only do large fly populations cause irritation that creates devastating production losses, but also spreads infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) or pinkeye. Pinkeye is a highly contagious disease that promotes inflammation of the cornea and conjunctiva portions of the eye. The occurrence of pinkeye increases in the spring and peaks in the summer months before decreasing in the fall.
